Texas Faith and Family Day Takes the Cake

February 27, 2015

Faith and Family day cake cutting (620-260)This weeks’ Faith and Family Day didn’t let bad weather stop the gathering of Texans from across the state to celebrate faith, family, and freedom. A highlight of the event was our celebration of the 10th anniversary of Texas’ marriage amendment. Numerous State Representatives and Senators joined together to cut a cake in honor of our state’s recognition of marriage between one man and one woman.

Earlier in the day, Governor Greg Abbott reminded Texans of his commitment to continue to fight for marriage stating, “The Constitution gives states the right to define marriage.” In addition, two of the “Houston 5” pastors encouraged the crowd to stand up for their faith without fear. Sen. Donna Campbell gave a stirring speech for protecting our religious liberty and was followed by Lt. Governor Dan Patrick who closed the ceremony by stressing the importance of faith in God and the need for “difference makers” in Texas “who stand for life, who stand for marriage, and who stand for the Constitution.”

Our coalition partners briefed attendees on important upcoming legislation and issues including: state sovereignty on marriage, protection for minors seeking abortion without parental consent, and many others. Our president, Jonathan Saenz, discussed the important need for the Texas Religious Freedom Amendment (SJR 10 by Sen. Campbell), similar to the federal religious freedom protections recently upheld in the Hobby Lobby Supreme Court case.

We sincerely thank all the values-supporting Texans and elected officials that participated in this great day, and we encourage everyone to stay engaged through the remainder of the 84th Texas Legislative Session.
