Austin, TX – January 30, 2023: Today, Senator Mayes Middleton filed SB 649, to protect Texas women collegiate athletes. The bill will make sure that men cannot compete on women’s sports teams at the college level. Last session, the Texas legislature passed HB 25, authored by Representative Valoree Swanson, that keeps boys out of girls sports in K-12 UIL athletic competitions. With the recent incident like that of male swimmer Lia Thomas competing and dominating the NCAA championship for women’s swimming, the state needs a law to make sure that women’s athletics competitions and scholarships are protected at the college level as well.

Texas Senator Mayes Middleton stated:

“I filed the Save Women’s Sports Act to protect the integrity of women’s sports. The bill makes sure women are not forced to compete against biological men, who steal victories and athletic records from females, and put women’s athletic scholarships unfairly at risk,” said Senator Middleton. “Allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports erodes Title IX, a federal law that protects opportunities previously denied to women.”

Mary Elizabeth Castle, Director of Government Relations for Texas Values Action released this comment:

“Title IX was passed 50 years ago to give women like me equal rights in athletics and education and we cannot allow those rights to be taken away. Texas must pass a law to make sure that college women athletes do not have their opportunities to compete and be victorious in sports stolen by men wanting to compete as women. Women athletes are winning the legal battle on this issue in other states. It is time for Texas to join other states in standing up for college women athletes.”

Texas Values Action is the leading organization on the issue of saving women’s sports in Texas.
